Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter

Artist's concept of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft
Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter

Overview:

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, managed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, will conduct investigations that will prepare and support future human exploration of the moon. Onboard is the JPL-built Diviner instrument, designed to measure lunar surface temperatures at scales that provide essential information for future surface operations and exploration. The temperature of the lunar surface and subsurface is a critical environmental parameter for future human and robotic exploration.

JPL designed, built and manages the Diviner instrument for NASA's Exploration Science Mission Directorate, Washington. UCLA is home institution of Diviner's principal investigator, David Paige. NASA's Goddard Spaceflight Center, Greenbelt, Md., manages the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. It is a NASA mission with international participation from the Institute for Space Research in Moscow.
